The primary mission of the juvenile department is to protect the public from juvenile crime and delinquency. The department holds criminal and delinquent youth accountable for their behavior through a system of graduated sanctions, restorative justice and appropriate supervision, and requires appropriate treatment and training of youths and families based upon a variety of risk assessments.
The Juvenile Department is also primarily responsible for legal proceedings relating to children who are victims of abuse or neglect and may require out-of-home placement or other services. It works closely with a variety of other state and local agencies and the courts to provide for the care and safety of these children.
