Vector/Weed Control Seasonal Monitor
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Contract seasonal employees in this position are responsible for the surveying and monitoring of mosquito larvae and weeds in the field and the application of pesticides.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
This position works under the immediate supervision of the Vector/Weed Seasonal Manager and under the general supervision of the Vector/Weed Inspector.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision of other employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification.
EXAMPLES OF PRINCIPAL DUTIES
(The following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management).
Ø Surveying specific sites for the presence of mosquito larvae and weeds in the field; collection and proper handling of mosquito larvae; placement of mosquito larvicide; hand or manual removal of selected weed species.
Ø Testing mosquito samples for the West Nile virus; submit mosquito samples to the State for random testing.
Ø Complete accurate and detailed records of surveying and monitoring results.
Ø Responsible for picking up, loading, unloading and storage of supplies; keep storage locker, office area and work areas clean and organized.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THIS POSITION
Knowledge of: field investigative procedures; larvae collection protocol; basic knowledge of noxious weeds.
Ability to: accurately identify mosquito species; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; work independently without direct supervision; deal effectively and tactfully with a variety of individuals including co-workers and the public; comprehend and follow instruction.
Skill in: the safe operation of an ATV in rough terrain including loading and unloading from a trailer or truck. Skill in the use of GPS units for location data collection.
QUALIFICATIONS
Six months experience in pest or weed control work in the private or public pest control agency or a satisfactory equivalent combination of experience and training which require knowledge and skills necessary to perform the duties of the position.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Must have a trainee’s license from the Department of Agriculture. Must possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record. A safe and acceptable driving record must be maintained throughout the course of employment. One of the three seasonal positions must be a Jordan Valley resident and be able to provide own reliable, insured and registered vehicle. Mileage will be paid for employees required to use their own vehicle.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS ANDWORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in the field that may subject employee to the adverse conditions including heat, wind, and rain, muddy or dusty areas including areas where the possibility of getting wet is likely. The chance of mosquito bites as well as other insect bites is high. Work requires standing, walking, kneeling, bending, climbing, lifting and moving up to 50 pounds, pushing and reaching.
HOURS WORKED PER WEEK
40 hours a week from May through September not to exceed 595 hours. Work hours may include early mornings or late evenings and possibly weekends. The following holidays will be paid if the employee works the day before and the day after Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day.
